App launcher

a UI for the user to easily launch apps.

can be used to assist the user

  • environment management
  • set startup arguments
  • distribute a curated list of apps to the user (to install)

The app launcher is not always a separate app

  • android launcher
  • your desktop

Launchers can have extensions or plugins

icon launchers

a collection of icons you can click that launch apps.
e.g. windows desktop, android & iphone desktop

Windows launchers

    • seems the same as a normal folder with app & url shortcuts, but with a nice UI, might as well use Windows folders instead
    • edit and launch view are the same (always displays add app button)

Often work supplies a web launcher to employees. E.g. okta
Or a software installer like Software Center
